Rethinking the world: spatial, regional and local context of CEE economies and societies

Guest editors: Codruța Mare (Babeș-Bolyai University, Romania) Katarzyna Kopczewska (University of Warsaw, Poland)

Motivation

Changes to economies and societies often have spatial dimensions: they happen locally or regionally, and are interrelated with neighbouring locations. Understanding spatial context sheds new light for processes that usually are analysed in non-spatial way. This special issue is to discover local, regional and in general spatial relations in major aspects of life: health, accessibility, finance, energy, climate, digital world. It is to analyse those phenomena with regard to location, considering neighbourhood effects that arise and referring to peripherality / centrality of places. Recent times, focused on rebuilding societies and economies after COVID-19 pandemics and during the invasion of Russia on Ukraine, make us understanding the world again. We re-valuate priorities, we observe uncovered gaps, we appreciate our investments that paid off. This special issue welcomes papers that rethink the world and try to see old phenomena in new perspective.

We invite you to submit articles that focus on the following problems:

  • Public health in spatial dimension, including long-term COVID-19 regional impact,
  • Urban and regional resilience and competitiveness,
  • Spatial planning, mobility, accessibility and its links to local and regional socio-economic development,
  • Energy and climate from a spatial perspective,
  • How the digital world has reshaped space – local and regional issues of digitalisation, e-services etc.,
  • Financial sector from a spatial perspective, including fintech, insurance.

Especially, we invite papers that focus on Central-Eastern Europe. Spatial, regional and local context of analysis should be supported with quantitative methods addressing those issues, like spatial statistics, spatial econometrics and/or spatial machine learning.
