Analysis of efficiency of Europeanand American higher education institutions– nonparametric approach

This article presents an analysis of the research and teaching efficiency of 505 universities from 10 European countries and the U.S. in the period 2000–2012. In order to calculate the efficiency scores a nonparametric method of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) has been adopted. The set of inputs contains: total revenues, academic staff and total number of students, research output is measured by total number of publications, while teaching output is proxied by total number of graduates. In the second stage analysis the model is tested (separately for the European and American sample) in which efficiency scores are related to the potential determinants: source of revenues, size of the university, location and year of foundation. In particular, it was shown that research efficiency of European HEIs is negatively associated with the share of public funds while in case of American public universities the effect is opposite. For the both groups, higher research and teaching efficiency was characterized for bigger units, with longer tradition and located in wealthier areas
